30 October 2026, 09:30 – 17:30
CEON, Aula Magna (246), Faculty of Humanities, Negrijeva 6, Pula
The academic and professional conference Journalism Forum 2026: Knowledge Transfer on Current Issues is organised on the occasion of the opening of the Centre for Sustainability of Journalism Education (CEON), which operates within the Faculty of Humanities at Juraj Dobrila University of Pula.
Journalism and the media are facing rapid technological, social, regulatory and professional changes that raise new questions about the education of current and future journalists. The Forum is launched as a periodic conference that creates a space for dialogue among those who shape journalism, the media and journalism education, with the aim of transferring and exchanging knowledge and jointly identifying current challenges, needs and opportunities for development.
The first edition of this one-day conference features six thematic dialogues. The Forum is conceived as a conference with invited participants, selected on the basis of the relevance of their knowledge and experience to each topic and the principle of representing diverse perspectives. The Forum concludes with a brief summary of key insights, followed by an opportunity for informal conversations about future collaboration.
The thematic areas include: sustainability of journalism and the media; regulation, innovation and professional development in journalism; (dis)trust in the media; how we watch TV today?; journalists’ safety and women in journalism and the media.
The Forum brings together representatives of higher education and other educational institutions, researchers, journalists, editors, representatives of media publishers and media organisations, professional associations, regulatory bodies, public institutions and civil society organisations, and is also open to journalism students and students in related fields, as well as anyone else interested in contributing to the dialogue on journalism education.
Questions concerning journalism education cannot be addressed by a single institution or profession alone. The intention is to share knowledge and experience, identify key challenges, contribute to shaping the Forum’s recommendations, and connect with others with whom new collaborations, research and educational initiatives may emerge.
The official language of the conference is Croatian, with English interpretation provided for international participants.
Organising and Programme Committee: Tijana Vukić, Jasna Vaniček-Fila, Dina Cvek Zubaj, Renata Boljun and Lara Ljubenović.

BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF THE THEMATIC DIALOGUES
Journalism and Media Sustainability
The dialogue brings together academic and professional perspectives with international experience in developing sustainable journalism. It focuses on the key dimensions and current challenges of media sustainability, as well as the models, approaches and conditions that can support the long-term sustainability of journalism and the media. A dedicated part of the discussion will address the sustainability of journalism education and the importance of a systematic approach to the lifelong education of media professionals.
Moderator: Assoc. Prof. Tijana Vukić
Regulation, Innovation and Professional Development in Journalism
Journalism is continuously changing under the combined influence of new regulatory frameworks, technological developments and innovations in media practice. The dialogue brings insights from European institutions, the media industry and academia to explore how these changes affect journalistic work, the operation of media organisations and the development of the profession. The exchange will also help identify new competencies needed by current and future journalists.
Moderator: Andrea Čović Vidović
(Dis)Trust in the Media
The media cannot fulfil their societal role without audiences, and trust is a key element of this relationship. The dialogue brings together different views on what shapes (dis)trust in the media today and how trust can be built and maintained. Particular attention will be given to journalistic ethics, as well as the knowledge, values and professional practices that are important for building relationships with audiences.
Moderator: Prof. Gordana Vilović
How Do We Watch TV Today?
The ways in which audiences consume television and other audio-visual content are changing rapidly. The dialogue focuses on changing audience habits, developments in content and distribution, and how television is adapting to new media environments. These changes will also provide a starting point for considering how future journalists and other media professionals can be prepared for contemporary audio-visual practices.
Moderator: Ksenija Kardum
Journalists’ Safety
Journalists’ safety involves various risks and threats associated with journalistic work, as well as questions of responsibility and the mechanisms for preventing and addressing them. The dialogue focuses on current challenges to journalists’ safety and the professional and institutional responses to them. Professional training plays an important role in preparing journalists to recognise risks, protect themselves and work safely.
Moderator: Jasna Vaniček-Fila
Women in Journalism and the Media
What is the position of women in journalism and the media today, and how do they contribute to the development of the profession? The dialogue focuses on gender equality and representation, as well as opportunities for professional development and the barriers women encounter. Concrete examples of initiatives aimed at strengthening the position of women will be linked to the role of journalism education in creating a more equal and inclusive professional environment.
