Irena Srdanović is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of Japanese corpus linguistics, computer-assisted language learning, lexicography, and the teaching of Japanese as a foreign language. She is the founder of the undergraduate and graduate programs in Japanese studies at the Faculty of Humanities Juraj Dobrila University of Pula – the first accredited programs of their kind in Croatia – where she also heads the Department of Asian Studies. Srdanović also serves as President of the Association of Teachers of the Japanese Language in the Republic of Croatia.
Irena Srdanović completed her undergraduate studies in Japanology at the University of Belgrade, earned Master’s degree at the University of Ljubljana, and obtained PhD from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the University of Ljubljana. She conducted research within the prestigious 21st Century COE Program for Centers of Excellence and was selected as a Special Researcher at Tokyo Tech. Her research focuses on empirical, corpus-based approaches to study and description of the Japanese language (using large corpora such as BCCWJ, CEJC, JpTenTen, etc.), as well as the application of new technologies in language learning. She spent a year in professional training at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), where she continued to be activelly envolved in numerious projects.
Srdanović has made significant contributions to corpus linguistics and lexicography, particularly through the creation of grammar files for lexical and grammatical profiling of Japanese in the Sketch Engine system, and through participation in the development of online corpora (JpWaC, JpTenTen, tourism corpus). She developed systems for the extraction of collocations and long-distance relations, thereby advancing educational and lexicographic resources. She actively involves students in research activities, from conference presentations to lexicographic projects.
Irena Srdanović is the author and editor of several reviewed scholarly monographs, including An Introduction to the Science of the Japanese Language—a pioneering work in the field of Japanese studies in the region—and Digital Resources for Learning Japanese (University of Bologna). Her work has been published in esteemed journals such as Rasprave, Metodički ogledi, Nihongo kyōiku (Japanese Language Teaching), Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science, ALA, and Natural Language Processing, as well as in edited volumes (including an invited chapter in a book series on corpora and the Japanese language by NINJAL). She is a member of the editorial boards of three international journals (Acta Linguistica Asiatica, Slovenščina 2.0, and Tabula). Srdanović has delivered invited lectures at international symposia and has been a visiting scholar at institutions in Europe and Japan. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and research grants, including the Hakuho Fellowship and the Japan Foundation Research Fellowship.
She has led three scientific research projects, including a competitive ARRS project, and has participated in numerous international collaborations with universities and research institutes in Japan, Slovenia, Croatia, and other (e.g., NINJAL, Tokyo Tech, Tsukuba, Ljubljana, Munich). Srdanović is active in international projects focused on Japanese vocabulary development, AI, and chatbot-based language learning solutions. As the founder of Japanese study programs in Pula, she has initiated innovative teaching methods, collaborations with cultural and business institutions, and established numerous international academic connections. She has organized several international conferences and supervised many students.
Irena Srdanović has been awarded a Commendation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for her contribution to the development of Japan–Croatia cultural relations and for fostering friendship between Japan and other nations.
