The Department of Languages, Culture and Mediation is grounded in the long-standing tradition of the Faculty of Humanities in Pula. Emerging from the framework of classical philology, the Department has fostered humanistic values through the study of the language, literature, and culture of the ancient world. In response to contemporary challenges, it has gradually embraced interdisciplinary approaches, thereby enriching its activities with new fields of knowledge. With the introduction of the single-major undergraduate programme Language and Intercultural Mediation (LIM), the Department has expanded its academic scope, developing programmes that integrate classical and modern philological content, cultural studies, translation practices, and intercultural communication. Focused on the needs of a globalised, multilingual, and multicultural society, the Department enables students to acquire intercultural competences, master contemporary communication strategies, and adopt new technologies in language use and translation.
The teaching process is based on an individualised and interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of language, culture, and society. The knowledge and skills acquired prepare them for professional work in education, culture, media, international institutions, translation, and in various forms of intercultural mediation.
The Department’s vision is directed towards the continuous strengthening of academic and teaching excellence, connecting the humanistic tradition with contemporary educational needs, and creating a stimulating environment that promotes academic excellence, critical thinking, and active participation in global flows of knowledge and culture.
Undergraduate study programme Language and Intercultural Mediation
Language and Intercultural Mediation
Communication in a multilingual and multicultural environment requires a high level of intercultural communicative competence across different social contexts and levels of formality. The single-major undergraduate university study programme in Language and Intercultural Mediation responds to these demands by preparing students to mediate between languages and cultures, to apply communication strategies appropriate to specific social and cultural contexts, and to engage in translation through the appropriate use of translation techniques and technologies.
Introduction to business processes in the language industry, as well as in international and multilingual organisations, and the establishment of connections with the labour market constitute integral components of this undergraduate programme. Teaching is based on an individualised approach to learning and an interdisciplinary approach to course content, in line with contemporary perspectives on language and culture in general, as well as with the role of different languages and cultures in the modern era.
Who can enrol in the programme?
All candidates who have completed secondary education and have obtained a B level in the State Matura examinations (Croatian language, Mathematics, and a foreign language).

Full-time study.

3 years (6 semesters).
What does the programme offer?
Theoretical foundations in language and intercultural mediation, as well as core communicative, translation, and other competences necessary in various fields that combine these two domains.

What competences does a graduate acquire upon completing the programme?
Graduates are qualified:
- to communicate in multilingual and multicultural environments and to mediate between languages and cultures, using communication strategies appropriate to specific social and cultural contexts;
- to engage in translation through the appropriate use of translation techniques, procedures, and technologies;
- to think critically about social and cultural similarities and differences based on the comparative analysis of literary, historical, geographical, political, anthropological, and other content.

Project title: Između margine i memorije: talijanske spisateljice 19. i 20. stoljeća u fundusu Sveučilišne knjižnice u Puli // Between Margin and Memory: Italian Women Writers of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries in the Holdings of the University Library in Pula (FundusFem)

The project comprises interdisciplinary academic research activities focused on Italian women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries represented in the holdings of the University Library in Pula. The research encompasses archival and bibliographic investigation, as well as the identification, transcription, and analysis of literary, journalistic, and epistolary materials, with particular emphasis on periodicals, women’s writing, cultural history, and Italian-language minority heritage. The project also includes the digitisation of selected materials, metadata creation, the development of an open-access digital repository, and the application of digital tools for text analysis. Academic activities further involve the preparation of scholarly publications, conference presentations, thematic workshops, student participation in research and dissemination, and collaboration with partner institutions in Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.
Student organizations and projects
Između margine i memorije: talijanske spisateljice 19. i 20. stoljeća u fundusu Sveučilišne knjižnice u Puli // Between Margin and Memory: Italian Women Writers of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries in the Holdings of the University Library in Pula (FundusFem) is an institutional research project that also includes the active involvement of students in a structured research component. Students participate in the analysis of women’s authorship in the journal Varietas by examining assigned volumes, identifying and extracting literary and journalistic contributions authored by women, collecting and archiving complete texts, preparing bibliographic records, and organising research materials. They also compile lists of male authors for the subsequent analysis of potential pseudonyms, and collect editorial introductions, readers’ letters, and translations. Through these activities, students contribute to the development of a digital corpus and repository, while supporting future scholarly analyses, publications, and conference presentations.
