Sažetak predavanja

Journalism plays a major role in maintaining and developing a democratic society. This lecture will use Japan as an example to elucidate the specific activities of journalism and the challenges it faces in the digital age. It will also explain the institutional guarantees of freedom of expression that underpin this. Japan is unique in the world in that it is a country with essentially "mass" media, where newspapers are delivered to homes every morning and television is available for free across the country, regardless of whether it is urban or rural. This lecture will provide an intriguing discussion of how these media have contributed to shaping social opinion.
